OUT – Us in society

The church is shaped and organised around the three key relationships we have as followers of Jesus. There’s UP – our relationship with God, IN – our relationship with one another in God’s family, the Church, and OUT – our relationship within the wider community where we serve and witness to God’s love in Jesus Christ.

This page gives a little information on some key aspects of how we help one another in our OUT relationship in society.

Men’s events with a purpose
Whether it’s sport or thought that does it for you – or a mix of these or anything else for that matter – our varied programme of events aim to help you become the person God wants you to be. So there’s football on a Monday evening, or the occasional golf day, thought provoking talks and challenging discussions, walks, quizzes and informal evenings to help you think about the big issues of life. We often meet at The Horse and Groom in Linby or the Rolls Royce Social Club. Brother Andrew – a guy who was prepared to do bold things for God – said, ‘If your vision doesn’t scare you, then both your vision and your God are too small.’ We want to help one another find and keep the adventure in life.

The Natter concept is rather a simple one. It is a time for older people to get together and, well, have a natter! Tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes are served. In Natter faith is kept to a minimum however if you would like a Natter with God please do ask and one of the team who will be more than willing to help you with that.

Natter runs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month with breaks at Christmas, Easter and the summer determined by the team. For more information or help with transport to get to Natter call the Church on 0115 8400 225 or email info@wrbc.co.uk

chrisWednesday Afternoon Fellowship
If you’re older but interested in a whole range of life’s experiences and people’s stories, and you want to meet with others over a home-made tea, then this afternoon group could be just what you’re looking for. If variety’s the spice of life then how about this! Recently we’ve heard about Fred & Ginger’s dance story and how to run a wild life sanctuary. Someone shared stories of her life in the Salvation Army, while we’ve also heard from a detective in the Nottinghamshire Police. There’s also been afternoons of flower arranging and card making, plus the occasional summer cream tea outing. Join the thirty or so people who meet fortnightly for a talk followed by that wonderful home-made tea. You’ll love the atmosphere and the welcome. Want to know more? Service at 4 – Monthly on the third Sunday
As we get older we meet problems of health, declining energy and loss of loved ones. Then there are also our on-going concerns for family and friends. What if there was a place to come together for a short time to be restored and have an up-lift? This is what ‘Service at 4’ is about. Surprise! Surprise! We meet at 4pm on the third Sunday of each month for a short service. We sing some of the great Christian hymns accompanied by the Church organ – hymns you probably remember from your younger days. There’s also prayer and a short talk to help you cope with life and the issues you face. We worship and seek God’s blessing and peace. But then the service continues! We then sit down together at around 4.40 to be served tea – sandwiches, trifle and cakes and a chance to enjoy a good chat. Come and join us!

Care in Hucknall homes for the elderly
You may have an aging relative in one of the local homes. The churches in the local area serve nearly all the homes. As one of those churches we visit various care homes in the town approximately once a month. We share the service with St John’s at Hallcroft. We take services at Elm Tree Lodge where we share worship and communion with the residents. We also go into Aldercar where the residents enjoy the service and also communion. If you have a relative in one of these and would like us to make a special point of seeking them out then do let us know. And of course you would also be welcome to come along and share in these services and help with the singing. Keep a look out on What’s on? Event calendar where times are published.

street pastorsStreet Pastors
Every Friday evening a team of Street Pastors goes out into Hucknall to chat with people out for the evening. They meet the needs of the public in a variety of ways – from a general chat right, handing out lollipops and flip-flops through to helping those who have got into some real trouble that may even be endangering their well-being. They have become a much valued part of the weekend scene in the town. The police and many individuals have appreciated their presence and willingness to listen. According to the police the town has become a calmer place on Friday evenings. And there are prayer pastors at ‘base-camp’ providing prayer and telephone support. If you want to help or know more about this ministry contact Martin on hucknall@streetpastors.org.uk

wrbc_out_action_smlAction Teams
Faith and action go together! Every couple of months we have Saturday morning teams that engage in projects in the community. We do clean-ups whether it’s litter picking or a more extensive project like the one recently to refresh the tired plot on the corner of Jenny Burton Way. Another team visits some who are shut-in or in care homes. We’ve done gardening in the past for those who are finding it difficult. And we also keep in touch with the various neighbourhoods of Hucknall through leaflet-drops. Watch the Events Calendar if you want to join one or have a word with Simon Robinson. simon@wrbc.co.uk

We hold a series of evenings from time to time to help anyone interested in finding out about what it means to discover faith personally. It’s a short introduction to the Christian faith. As well as looking at Jesus and what he taught and why he died, it also enquires about the Christian claim that Jesus was raised from the dead. It also looks at practical Christian issues of prayer and whether the Bible can be trusted and is able to help us today. It’s based around a meal with plenty of time to relax, ask questions and share your own thoughts and experiences. Some who share their personal stories on our website have attended Alpha and you can read how it helped them. We hold Alpha for men only, women only as well as the normal open Alpha for anyone. Want to discover Alpha for yourself? Register here for the next course.
