History of WRBC
Our Story
Watnall Road Baptist Church has been part of Hucknall’s life for nearly two centuries. From small beginnings in homes and rented spaces to a purpose-built chapel and vibrant 21st-century ministries, our story is one of God’s faithfulness and community faith in action.
Early Beginnings
Local Baptists were already meeting in Hucknall by the early 1800s.
These small gatherings took place in homes and hired rooms, reflecting the growing presence of nonconformist Christianity in the town.
Hucknall was still a village at this time, but the seeds of a thriving fellowship had been planted.
Becoming Independent
In 1849, the Hucknall Baptist fellowship became an independent church, no longer relying on oversight from other congregations.
Meetings were held in modest chapels near Derbyshire Lane and Gilbert Street (today part of the site later known as Lines Motor Services LTD).
This period saw the congregation grow steadily as Hucknall expanded with the arrival of industry and the railway.
Building on Watnall Road
The Watnall Road chapel opened in 1876, providing the congregation with a permanent home.
Designed in the Italian Renaissance/Veronese style, the new building became a local landmark.
Schoolrooms and additional spaces were soon added, supporting a thriving Sunday School and community activities.
The church quickly established itself as part of Hucknall’s social and spiritual fabric.
A Century of Witness
Throughout the 20th century, WRBC remained a centre for worship, mission, and community life.
The church navigated two World Wars, social changes, and Hucknall’s transition from a mining town to a modern community.
Youth work, missions, and local partnerships became hallmarks of church life.
Many Hucknall families can trace connections to WRBC through baptisms, weddings, and community gatherings.
A Church for Today
In the 21st century, WRBC continues to be a lively, welcoming church.
Our ministries now include modern worship services (in-person and online), a busy coffee shop, children’s and youth groups, and events that serve the whole community.
We’re proud of our heritage, but our focus remains forward-looking: helping people find and follow Jesus in Hucknall and beyond.
Looking Ahead
Our story is still being written. From early meetings in small chapels to a church that serves hundreds today, one thing has never changed: a passion for Jesus and a love for our community.
